The New York Public Library has, for many years, been a keen observer of new digital trends. Back in the day, it was one of the first websites to adopt and stand up for web standards, and has since been on the forefront of innovation.
In their latest initiative, they have created a digital version of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventure in Wonderland and published it on their Instagram story. The novel was illustrated by designer Magoz.
But, you may ask, won’t it disappear after 24 hours as stories do? No. It has been added to the “highlights” feature, that you find below the profile information. This way, the books are always available for your reading pleasure.
This is a very smart use of Digital technologies in Culture, bringing books to a platform that reaches over 800 million people, and is the preferred social network today. It will surely help with NYPL’s mission of forming new readers, and is a new way for people to find and enjoy some literature classics.
The Instagram library (Insta Novels) will of course grow. One of the next books to be featured will be “The Metamorphosis”, by Franz Kafka.
