Building a website for a shorts competition

The European Wine City initiative 2018 was attributed to Alenquer and Torres Vedras, two cities with a developing wine industry. I was commissioned by the Torres Vedras Municipality to build a site for the shorts competition they were launching.

Called “Da vinha ao Vinho” (from the vineyard to the wine), the contest aims to stimulate the production of short films that celebrate the heritage associated with Wine and Vineyards, taking into account their cultural context and the experience of the local community.

I started by having a meeting with the clients, over lunch, to discuss the requirements of the project. Then, coordinating with one of them, I started work.

I used a flexible WordPress theme and tailored it to meet the needs of the client. The features the theme provides, along with a few well chosen plugins, did the job well.

Mostly, the site highlights what the competition is about, how to participate, the jury, and has an application form for enrollment.

Lessons learned:

  • Have a clear grasp of the client needs as soon as possible,
  • Be clear about deadlines, and do your best to stick to them,
  • Have a “supporter” in the client. Someone available to work with you at critical points in the process,
  • Get feedback after completing the project.

You can see the site at https://www.davinhaaovinho.pt/en/home-2/ , and if you’re from the cinema field, you can apply until September 30. Go for it!
