Twitter is 5!

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Twitter turned five yesterday. To mark this event, they launched a video featuring many public figures, from Hilary Clinton to Martha Stewart to Richard Branson. Here’s it is:

A Vision of Students Today

Thursday, March 11th, 2010

This video takes a look at American students, their relationship with technology, and their most important characteristics. Things are very different from, say, even 10 years ago. The educational system needs to catch up in most countries, because the reality has changed so much in a very short time. What do you think needs change?

Upload 2.0 – A success

Upload 2.0, by seegno
Last Saturday, about 300 people gathered in Lisbon, to attend the Upload 2.0 Conference. This was the first event of its kind taking place in Portugal. The aim was to gather a number of thinkers and researchers in the area of communication, to understand the constant changes that come with the social Web. I believe the aim was achieved.
In general the talks were very good. A couple of speakers clearly weren’t used to talking in front of an audience, but that can’t be held against them. It all comes with practice. The ones that caught my attention the most were Luis Rasquilha, Vasco Trigo, and Daniel Caeiro.
A fact that was much discussed was the presence of a Twitter Wall on stage, where tweets about what was going on were seen in real time. The obvious advantage of this was the interaction it provided: we could see the social web at work right there. On a less positive note were a couple of less flattering comments about some of the talks. But all in all, I think it added more to the conversation than it took away.
I got to meet new and interesting people, as well as see old friends from past conferences.
In a sentence, Upload 2.0 was well worth it, and I’m looking forward to Upload 2010.

Upload 2.0 Meeting

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Upload Lisboa
Next Saturday (14th November) takes place the Upload Conference, a Web2.0 meeting. As far as I know, this is the first attempt at such an event here in Portugal. For that alone, the organizers already have my admiration. According to them, the goal is to gather a number of thinkers and researchers in the area of communication, to understand the constant changes that come with the social Web.
The only less positive aspect I find is that there will be no WiFi access at the venue, so the participants won’t have a chance to actually participate in the conversation in real time (unless they bring their own connection, of course).
All in all, I think this event will be a success. I will surely try to make the most of it. Who else is going?

Readings: My Amazon review of “Crush It!”

Friday, November 6th, 2009

This is the review I left at Amazon for Crush It!, by Gary Vaynerchuck:
I had great expectations for this book, being a fan of Gary’s style. I must say that Crush It! doesn’t disappoint. Gary’s tone gets you energised from the first page. He really believes in his message, and it comes across. He guides us in creating our own personal brand. If you have a passion (as most of us do), you must follow it, work like hell, and the results will come. But you must read the book to know all the details, from the man himself. Ah, and it’s small book. I finished it in two evenings. The essentials are all there, with no beating aroud the bush. A must.

Connect

Friday, October 30th, 2009

One thing you absolutely need to build a community is to care about others, to give a damn. Think about what you can do to change things, as small as it may seem, and start doing it. At first, it may not seem like much. But in time, things will change.
We are all connected; you just have to make the first move. Create a spark, and the results can be mind blowing.
Connect, just like Juan Mann did in the Free Hugs Campaign he started over three years ago in Australia. Today, there are such campaigns all over the World. It spread like wildfire. A community was formed.
You can make a difference, one person at a time.

Gary Vaynerchuk: Building Personal Brand Within the Social Media Landscape

Gary Vaynerchuk at the Web 2.0 Conference in New York. He talks about personal branding, and about why you should JUST do what you love and work at it! Contains strong language. Cool!

SHiFT08: 3 days very well spent

Monday, October 20th, 2008

SHiFT - Social and Human Ideas For Technology Another edition of SHiFT, another success. It was 3 days very well spent. Highlights go to Andy Budd, Mike Stenhouse, Fred Oliveira, and Tara Hunt. These speakers, among others, sure gave me much food for thought.

Also, and equally important, I met some wonderful and inspiring people like José, Patrícia, Célia, and Ricardo.

SHiFT was, above all, a chance to feel “at home” for three days, a chance to talk about the issues I care about and know I would be understood. And that, in a context such as I find myself nowadays, is a huge breath of fresh air.

So congratulations to Pedro, André, André, Bruno, and all others who made SHiFT such a success. I’ll see you in 2009.

A List Apart turns 10

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

Ten Years, by Jeffrey Zeldman, is the Article about A List Apart’s tenth anniversary. Has it really been 10 years? Scary. I have known A List Apart for a good part of those 10 years, read and profited from countless articles, and posted about several of them. I wish you all the success for the next ten years! And may I be here to witness them.
