Readings: A Thousand Splendid Suns
Thursday, November 20th, 2008A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, is the story of two women, Mariam and Laila, before, during, and after the Taliban rule in Afghanistan. It’s a deep, heartbreaking account of their lives that has you hooked from page one. The author decided to portray the feminine point of view with this novel, having written The Kite Runner
from the perspective of a boy/man. It is hard to describe this book, so many are the moving and at times hard to read descriptions of suffering these two women endure. This is one of the best books I’ve ever read. Do not miss it. You won’t forget it in a long time.
World Usability Day 2008
Friday, November 14th, 2008
Yes, it was yesterday, 13 November: World Usability day 2008. This year’s theme was transportation. The Portuguese Usability Professional’s Association made it’s contribution by launching a thematic site where people can submit their impressions and experiences regarding the Portuguese Public Transport usability (or lack thereof).
One (bad) example that comes to mind are the Lisbon Subway ticket vending machines. I always get confused each time I have to recharge my travel card.
Codebits 2008 so far
Friday, November 14th, 2008The presentations part of codebits is now closed.
The ones I enjoyed the most were:
- André Luís on Microformats
- Pedro Custódio on Web Forms 101
- Mitch Altman on Making Cool Things with Microcontrollers
As last year, I didn’t stay for the coding contest part, but I sure will be there tomorrow for the final presentation of the projects. It’s refreshing and fun to see what these brilliant people come up with each time.
Here’s the live feed from the event. Take a look. You never know what might happen.
